Really Big Browns Don't Come Easy

Big brown trout are a prize catch the world over. Fly fishermen often go crazy at the sight of these spotted wonders. Big browns are not very easy to catch and it takes time, patience and luck to hold one of these speckled trophies for the camera. Your success with catching big brown trout, includes three factors:

Fish Where Big Browns Live

It takes lots of food to grow a monster. Lakes, reservoirs and tail-waters provide the consistent type of abundance required for big brown trout to thrive. Many of the biggest browns in the world grow in the Great Lakes and become exposed when they run up rivers to spawn. The same can be said about fish moving from the ocean up the rivers in Argentina. Do your research, find the brown trout waters and fish for them in the Fall.

Use Good Hooks

It seems like common sense to use the best steel for catching hook-jaw browns. I choose to use hooks that I know will not bend out. There are many different hooks one must use in order to best match the fishes food source, but I always consider my hook strength before I tie. I try to remember that its not the fly, but the hook I am trying to get the fish to eat...

Let Them Run

Most times I lose a fish worth taking a picture of, it is because I broke the fish off or pulled the hooks. It has been my experience that rushing the fight is not always the best way. It takes self control to back off and get my dumb left hand out of the way. Big brown trout are always a force to be reckoned with and all it takes is one line stalling mistake for most fish to break free. I have the best chance landing really big fish if I keep my rod tip high and allow the fish to take line without too much pressure.
